What does a typical day look like for you as the Treasurer of Itiwana?

It would be difficult to provide a definite answer to what atypical day as a treasurer looks like, as every day is different for me. There is, however, routine I try to follow that helps me stay on track with all responsibilities I hold as treasurer of association. First, I start by reviewing any financial-related e-mails, including invoices and payment notifications. I update our financial records, ensuring all transactions are accurately documented and categorized.

During busier periods, such as when preparing for a general assembly, my day becomes more intense with additional tasks like preparing financial reports, budgets or presentations. I try to plan this in advance, avoiding procrastination, which helps me stay on top of my responsibilities as Treasurer.

What motivated you to take on the role of Treasurer, and what skills have you developed through it?

Taking on the role of Treasurer was motivated by the opportunity to collaborate with other students and eagerness to help effectively manage the association’s finances. Through this role, I have developed strong financial management skills, such as budgeting, financial reporting, but also, improved my communication skills, as I sometimes need to explain financial concepts to others.

This role also enabled me to improve my organization skills. Being a board member can be intense and staying organized makes it a lot easier and manageable.

How has being part of the board changed your perspective on teamwork and leadership?

Being part of the board has changed my perspective on teamwork and leadership. I have come to appreciate the importance of diverse viewpoints in decision-making and the crucial role teamwork plays in running the association.

Being in the board, taught me that leadership is not just about giving directions, but about creating an environment where everyone can freely contribute their ideas and views, without the feeling of discrimination or exclusion.

Any tips for future treasurers or students interested in joining the board?

For future treasurers or students interested in joining the board, do not ever hesitate to ask for advice from previous members or predecessors. I personally found it a bit difficult in the beginning to manage all my responsibilities, however, with the help of others, I was able to learn and understand what initially seemed impossible for me. Being a board member is not merely about managing designated roles, but about building relationships and working collaboratively with others. If you think of becoming part of the association, I highly recommend you give it a try.
